Ideas for Principle #24

💡 Standing on a stool to reach the faucet and wash your hands.

Using oven mitts to hold a hot baking tray without getting burned.

Climbing a ladder to reach games that are high up on the bookshelf, or clothes that are up high in the closet.

Using a bridge to cross from one side of the river to the other.

Is there something dangerous or too hard to touch directly?!
Sometimes it's either not possible or too dangerous to face something head-on.

It's worth thinking: what can "mediate" between us and the hard thing, so we can deal with it safely?

A good mediator gives us access to things that would otherwise be too far away or too dangerous.

Ready for a challenge? We've prepared some extra challenges for you to try

Try checking it together. Put a little money in a box that's hard to open, and see if it's harder to touch than money sitting in your wallet.

Easy
1. Check together whether it's easier to hold a hot pot with a mitt or without, and why.
2. Ask your child who or what helps him do things he's afraid to do alone.

A bit of a stretch
3. Choose together to put part of his pocket money in a separate account for a week, and see if it's harder to spend it.
4. Check together whether it's easier to cross the street with an adult's help, compared to crossing it alone.

Challenge for champions
5. Ask your child to design a new mediator, a tool or habit that will stand between him and a temptation he finds hard to resist.
6. Try thinking together about a scary situation, and plan what mediator, person, tool, or in-between step would help get through it safely.
